Aerospace, Acoustics, and Autonomous Systems Research Group (AAA)

 

Aerospace, Acoustics, and Autonomous Systems is a research group within the Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences, at the University of Adelaide.

The AAA group possesses skills that are in high demand across industry and academia. The AAA group has a unique mix of skills, encompassing Acoustics, Vibration and Control, Aerospace, Flow and Noise Control, and Robotics and Automation, that enable it to meet the challenges of a wide range of international and national research and development projects and activities.

The AAA group was created in 2009, and currently consists of 13 academic staff, 5 postdoctoral research fellows and 47 plus postgraduate students, and a number of international visitors.

Mission Statement

To apply our skills, knowledge and experience to advance the fields of Aerospace, Acoustics, and Autonomous Systems to the benefit of society.

Research

Research funding is currently provided by industry, defence, government, and the Sir Ross & Sir Keith Smith Fund. Recently funded projects include:

  • Mining automation
    • The study and development of a 3D real-time stockpile management system [ARC Linkage and MatrixGroup]
  • Submarine stealth
    • Adaptive tuned mass damper for submarine engines [DSTO Capability Technology Demonstrator]
    • Adaptive exhaust silencer for submarine engines [DSTO Capability Technology Demonstrator]
    • Understanding and predicting submarine hydrofoil noise [ARC Linkage and Deep Blue Tech]
  • Flow and noise control
    • The mechanics of quiet airfoils (applications include air and land transport and wind turbines) [ARC Discovery]
    • Establishment of a large scale wind tunnel facility at the University of Adelaide [SA Premier's Science and Research Fund, The Sir Ross and Sir Keith Smith Fund, and The University of Adelaide] 
  • Condition monitoring
    • Novel vibro-acoustic technologies for detecting bearing and wheel defects in rail vehicles [ARC Linkage and Trackside Intelligence]
  • Ultrasonics
