Design, Build and Fly Competition 2004
In
2004, the inter-University design, build & fly competition
previously organised by The University of Sydney was deferred.
Enthused by our involvement in the 2003 competition, the AIAA
Student Branch decided to hold its own competition. An open invitation
to compete was put out to other universities and model aero clubs.
The
design specification for the competition was to build a remotely
controlled aircraft which would lift the greatest possible payload
weight for a set motor power.

The
competition was held at the Holdfast Model Aero Club, Holdfast Bay.
The competition was worked in with other events held by the club,
including pylon racing, WWI replica dog fighting, and a barbeque.
While only two entries participated in the competition, the event
was a success, with plenty of spectators and food to go around.
The official competition result, as called by the judges, was
a tie, with both planes lifting just over 3kg of payload.
The
University of Adelaide entry has been aquired by a
group of final year Maths & Computer Science students who
intend to convert it into a fully autonomous aircraft (or UAV)
as part of their final year project in 2005.
