Head of Mechanical Engineering
Professor Colin Hansen has been working in acoustics
and noise & vibration control for more than 30 years and has been an
Academic Staff member at The University of Adelaide for more than 15 years.
His PhD degree was awarded by The University of Adelaide in 1980 for his
work on sound radiation from vibrating surfaces. Prior to his current academic
appointment, which began in 1986, he spent seven years as a noise and vibration
consultant in the USA (Bolt Beranek and Newman Inc.) and Australia. He
is author of the text, "Understanding Active Noise Cancellation" and co-author
of the texts, "Engineering Noise Control" (for which the third edition
is to be published this year) and "Active Control of Noise and Vibration".
His current research interests are focussed almost entirely on active noise
and vibration control and he has authored or co-authored over 100 papers
in this area. The research effort has so far attracted more than $3.5 million
in funding from a number of different bodies. As well as contributing to
the understanding of the physical phenomena associated with active noise
and vibration control (see publications), the research has led to the development
of a low cost, robust electronic controller ideally suited to active noise
and vibration control. The technology thus developed is now licensed by
Causal Systems (of which Professor Hansen is a director) who are further
developing and marketing the controller. He is a past President of the
International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration.
