Optical tables typically use pneumatic springs for vibration isolation, and suffer from poor low frequency response, especially due to cross-coupling in the horizontal directions, as a consequence. By removing physical contact between the table and the ground with magnetic springs, there is the potential to reduce or even remove this detriment. Opportunities exist to develop novel and efficient magnetic configurations for single degree-of-freedom unstable systems, which may be controlled for levitation as well as attenuation with the application of advanced control theory.
