PublicationsIntegration of governing differential equations of continuum mechanics with scanning laser vibrometry technology for monitoring of structural damageStuart J. Wildy, Hannah Weisbecker, Ben S. Cazzolato, Andrei G. Kotousov (2009)Proceedings of the 5th International Workshop NDT in Progress Meeting of NDT experts, Prague, Czech RepublicAbstract:This paper discusses an algorithm based on the fundamental principles of continuum mechanics (viz. strain compatibility and conditions of equilibrium) in identifying delamination in composite beams. Using a 3D scanning laser vibrometer, the out-of-plane deflections of a composite panel can be measured. Utilising a Savitzky-Golay filter and the out-of-plane deflections, the algorithm is able to determine violations of the fundamental principles and therefore, indicating damage such as a void, crack or delamination. An experimental investigation was conducted utilising the algorithm for the detection of delamination in a composite beam and was verified with simulation.
